Title: What Does Complexity Mean to Software Developers?
Abstract: Industry developers frequently complain about the complexity of building software. But what do they mean, exactly? Are they only talking about code complexity, or are they talking about complexity of their organization, or something else entirely? In this talk, I discuss several recent studies about complexity performed by Google’s Engineering Productivity Research group. Over the last year, I joined this recently formed team at Google that has been tasked with studying and improving the productivity of the company’s software developers.
Short Bio: Dr. Murphy-Hill is an Associate Professor for the Department of Computer Science at North Carolina State University (NCSU) where he directs the Developer Liberation Front. His research spans human-computer interaction and software engineering, winning a National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 2013 and four ACM SIGSOFT Distinguished Paper Awards. He previously was a visiting scientist at Microsoft in 2012 and 2013, and at Google in 2016-2017.
