SC 06 - Introduction to Agile Methods for Software Development Daniel Cukier (LocaWeb) Rafael Prikladnicki (PUC-RS) Wednesday, September 29, 2010 (14:00-17:30)

Abstract:

When we develop software, we have to remember that people and interactions are more important than processes and tools. Collaborating with clients and the focus on client satisfaction is more important than long contracts. Moreover, business requirements can change. Technology can also change. Responding to such changes is more important than following a plan thinking that this plan will never change. Documents are also important, but are less important than working software. Base on this context, in this course we will present the Agile Manifesto, the concepts behind it and the changes that this Manifesto brought to the software industry. We will also present and explore some of the existing practices in XP (Extreme Programming) and Scrum, two of the main agile methodologies in use.

Lecturers:

• Daniel Cukier works with software development since 1995. He is master in Computer Science at University of S�o Paulo with the thesis Patterns for Introducing New Ideas in the Software Industry (http://vimeo.com/6094673). He is a Agilcoop member since 2006. He helped to introduce Agile Methods in Locaweb, the biggest hosting company in Latin America, where he works as software development manager. Daniel is used to write about the similarities between software development and Arts on his blog AgileAndArt? (http://www.agileandart.com). Besides the software area, he works with theater, music and poetry, has recently launched his first poetry book, titled "Para Todos" (For All).

• Rafael Prikladnicki is Assistant Professor of Computer Science School at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), Brazil. He is also a consultant and trainer on distributed software development, project management, software quality and agile methodologies for software development (focusing on Lean Thinking and Scrum). He is currently involved in projects related to distributed and global software development, agile methodologies, and software quality. He is one of the coordinators of the research group on distributed software development (MuNDDoS?) at PUCRS, coordinator of the SPIN network from SEI located in Porto Alegre (SPIN-POA) and coordinator of Agile Users Group in Porto Alegre, Brazil. He is also the general chair of the Agile Brazil Conference 2010.
