Goal and Agent-oriented Modeling with i*

Nowadays, understanding the social and organizational context is critical to the success of many systems today. The i* framework offers an agent-oriented approach to requirements engineering. By explicitly modeling and analyzing strategic relationships among multiple actors, the approach incorporates rudimentary social analysis into a systems analysis and design framework. Actors depend on each other for goals to be achieved, tasks to be performed, and resources to be furnished. A notion of softgoal is used to deal systematically with quality attributes, or nonfunctional requirements. Dependencies among actors give rise to opportunities as well as vulnerabilities. Networks of dependencies are analyzed using a qualitative reasoning procedure. During systems design, actors explore alternative configurations of dependencies to assess their strategic positioning in a multi-agent, social context. This tutorial will introduce, explain and demonstrate the i* framework with examples, and describe how to use it during the early stages of the requirements process. Authors:
- Jaelson Castro has been an associate professor at the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, Brazil, where he leads the Requirements Engineering Laboratory (LER), since 1992. He received his Ph.D. in 1990 from Imperial College, London. His research interests include requirements engineering, agent-oriented development, aspect-oriented development, model-driven development, and software product lines. He has also contributed to the organization of several events, acting as General Chair, Program Chair or Organizer of SBES 1995, WER 1998, WISDOM 1999, UML 2001, STRAW 2001, SELMAS 2002, SELMAS 2003, SBES 2004, CAiSE05?, IDEAS 2006, IDEAS 2008, iStar 2008, RIGIM 2009, iStar2010, WGBP 2010. Prof. Castro serves on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Agent-Oriented Software Engineering and Requirements Engineering journal. He has served as editor in chief of the Journal of the Brazilian Computer Society (JBCS).
- Fernanda Alencar is graduated in Electrical Engineering / Electronics (1986), MSc in Electrical Engineering (1991) and Ph.D. in Computer Science (1999) from Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, Postdoctoral at the University of Lisbon, Portugal (2006) and Postdoctoral Universidad Politcnica de Valencia (2008-2009). She is currently Adjunct Professor at Universidade Federal de Pernambuco. She has experience in Electronic Engineering / Teleinformtica and Computer Science with emphasis on Software Engineering, acting on the following topics: Requirements Engineering, Agent Oriented Development and Aspect-Oriented Development, Development driven by models and she has published several articles on these topics. She has participated actively at the LER research group (Laboratory Requirements Engineering) and at Information Engineering Group (GEInfo), both of Universidade Federal de Pernambuco. She has been a member of the program committee of several scientific events, such as SBES / CBSOFT, WER, RCIS, IDEAS/CIbSE.
- Ricardo Ramos is graduated in Data Processing (1999) from Faculdade de Tecnologia, specialist (2002) and Msc in Computer Science (2002) Universidade Federal de São Carlos from and Phd in Computer Science (2009) from Universidade Federal de Pernambuco. He is currently Adjunct Professor at Universidade Federal do Vale de São Francisco, Juazeiro - Bahia. He has participated actively at the LER research group (Laboratory Requirements Engineering). He has experience in Computer Science area with focus on Software Engineering. His research interests include requirements engineering, software quality, agent-oriented development and aspect oriented development.
